Music and Dance in Lower School
Our Early Learning-K students participate in the Music Together Preschool program which helps all children learn music in developmentally appropriate ways. This program uniquely integrates music experiences at home with those in school to create a music making community which supports a child’s language, cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development. Parents become involved through the Music Together recordings and songbooks, and they also participate in several Family Sing-a-Longs throughout the year.
Students in the primary grades focus on rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, and learning the language of notated music. The students learn the techniques of playing Orff instruments as well as recorders.
Students in the intermediate grades sharpen their skills by studying World Drumming, and studying Western and Non- Western Music and Culture. These students also learn the techniques of singing and performing in instrumental ensembles. All students in 5th and 6th grade will perform in either the Chorus or the Band. These two ensembles perform at at a variety of events throughout the school year.
Dance
Dance, movement, and yoga are integrated into the Lower School curriculum for grades 2-6. Students receiving dance instruction study various styles including: hip-hop, world dance, jazz, and intro to ballet. The dance classes perform several times a year at school events.
